The 93% We DON'T Say

Did you know that 93% of what we communicate is actually nonverbal? In truth, our outer appearance and body language has a much bigger impact on our audiences than anything we could ever say. I, honestly, was shocked and surprised at the low 7% we use to communicate verbally with people and wondered whether this was truly possible.

On Monday, October 12, 2009, my class watched part of the video, Secrets of Body Language, and it has really opened up a new range of thoughts for me. Before watching the video, I never knew politics had their body language coached and that something like a handshake could mean that you had dominant power over another person. It really brings a whole new perspective about not only listening to people talk but to look and to try to find hidden clues in their actions and every move. I really enjoyed it when the video showed examples of body language by putting in several George Bush videos. It made me laugh when he tried to exit through a door after saying a speech but found it locked. (LOL!) I honestly thought that letting someone in through the door before you was a sign of respect, but now I know that for politicians and people in the Middle East, those who lead people through doors have power and are the leaders in that group.

Celebrities! Have you ever wondered whether your favorite celebrity has been coached? Well, according to the video, Secrets of Body Language there are several signs to figure out whether your celeb has been taught the art of body language. First, try to notice any pauses between actions--as if they're thinking before acting. Secondly, look for gestures that don't seem natural; these are sure signs that the celebrity has been coached.

All in all, Secrets of Body Language was very informative, and I will never think the same way about president elections, celebrity interviews, and even cliques at school. This video has really opened up a whole new perspective, and I would recommend it to anybody who wants to learn about the 93% we don't say.

  1. Wow, I never knew all the things body language says for us either! I never even knew that some celebrities' body language were actually coached. I always thought that they were random movements that they made.
